Creating clarity through design, systems, and storytelling.

I design digital experiences and visual systems that make complex information easier to understand and use. For the past decade that has meant universities, museums, and scientific institutions, across websites, publications, and physical space.

About me

I'm James Davidson, a designer in the San Francisco Bay Area. For the past decade I've helped people make sense of complicated subjects, working across digital products, publications, and physical exhibits.
I currently design digital systems and experiences at Stanford Graduate School of Business. Before that I spent several years at the California Academy of Sciences, building online exhibits and science storytelling for public audiences.
My background is in visual communication, and it has moved steadily toward UX, accessibility, and systems thinking. I'm drawn to problems that sit between people, information, and technology, where the answer has to be both usable and worth looking at.
When I'm not designing, you'll usually find me exploring museums, outdoors with my family, reading something involving dragons or magic, or experimenting with whatever new technology has caught my attention.
